APTN National News, in conjunction with the Winnipeg Film Group, the Exchange District Biz, the University of Manitoba Centre for Human Rights Research, and its academic partners at the University of Winnipeg, proudly presents a special, in-person screening of its feature-length documentary, The Power Was With Us: Idle No More, a sweeping chronicle of the movement’s dramatic emergence back in late 2012 / early 2013. Directors/producers Rick Harp and Tim Fontaine are both scheduled to be in attendance.
It’s a movement few saw coming; to others, it was a chapter in a much greater story. Beginning in the winter of 2012, the Idle No More movement challenged what Canadians thought they knew about Indigenous peoples: it even changed what many Indigenous people thought of themselves. With no central leader, emerging across every province and territory, Idle No More’s emergence caught both the mainstream media and the federal government off guard, a surprise that would soon attract the attention of Canada’s security apparatus. Drawn from APTN National News’ extensive archives and a wide array of social media from that era, alongside interviews with those who were there, this two-part documentary explores the roots, impacts and ongoing legacy of this major Indigenous-led movement.
