THE DECOLONIZING LENS PRESENTS: INDIGENOUS FILMS FOR KIDS OF ALL AGES

The Decolonizing Lens invites you and your kids of all ages to a program of kid-tested and approved short films. Colton Willier, director of Skateboarding Pants and youngest filmmaker to present a film at the 2016 imagineNATIVE festival, and Winnipeg’s own Sonja Ballantyne, Director of Crash Site, will be in attendance to answer your questions and talk to your kids about becoming filmmakers.

CRASH SITE (Sonya Ballantyne)
After the sudden death of her parents, a young girl learns that superheros are real and that she can be one.

THE SPECTACULAR IMAGINATION OF THE POHARA BROTHERS (Todd Karehana)
Young Māori brothers give a flying lesson to a grumpy auntie, and make many people happy as a result.

ASSINI (Gail Maurice)
A young girl learns that Cowboys and Indians movies have nothing on her or her friends.

HOME TO ME (N’we Jinan Artists)
A catchy and inspiring music video brought to you by young people from Grassy Narrows First Nation.

UTE KANATA (Virginie Michel)
An O Canada manifesto for Indigenous languages.

THE DECOLONIZING LENS
A monthly series that features the work and words of Indigenous filmmakers from Winnipeg and beyond, The Decolonizing Lens is supported by the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation and the Women’s and Gender Studies program at the University of Manitoba. All screenings are free and open to everyone. Poster by the amazing Celeste Sutherland.

our location

We’re located in the heart of Winnipeg's historic Exchange District in the Artspace building. We are across the street from Old Market Square at the corner of Arthur Street and Bannatyne - one block west of Main.

The Winnipeg Film Group is located on Treaty 1 Territory and on the ancestral lands of the Anishinaabeg, Cree, Oji-Cree, Dakota and Dene Peoples and in the homeland of the Métis Nation. We offer our respect and gratitude to the traditional caretakers of this land.
