THE SUMMER CINEMATOGRAPHY WORKSHOP:

Session 1: Basic Info, Breaking down Stills and Clips. June 27 (1-4)

What does the cinematographer do?

Director/DoP Collaboration

Crew Responsibilities (Key Grip, Gaffer, Best Boy, etc) and their relationship with the cinematographer.

Different types of lighting.

Shots Compositions

Class Discussion (Stills)

 Session 2: Camera – June 28 (1-4)

Camera Basics (DSLR. C100), (ISO, t-stop, color balance, etc)

Lenses (Depth of Field)

Filters

Setting up the camera (Monitor, LUTs, DI, Tripod)

Camera Formats and resolutions (RAW, ProRes, etc)

Roles of 1st AC, and 2nd AC

Class Discussion (Movie Clips)

Session 3: Lighting – June 30 (1-4)

What is light? Purpose of lighting?

Basics of Gripping and Gaffing (Flags, Diffusion, power distribution)

Set Etiquette

Lighting equipment

Lighting Setups & examples (recreation of lighting setups of movie clips)

Session 4: Technical – Communicating with Cinematographer – July 4 (1-4)

Pre-production: Reading the script, pre-visualization, communicating with the director (using photographs, paintings, movie clips to describe the desired ‘look’), Location Scouting (what to look for while scouting, planning the day for exterior shoots, considering the weather, etc), discussion with the art or production designer (if the practicals are needed for lighting), shot breakdown, storyboarding, & etc.

Production:  Communicating with the director, key grip, gaffer and ACs.

Lighting Decisions

Choosing the right camera lenses for the scene.

Show videos in the class that we worked on and discuss our workflow.

-The Winnipeg Film Group reserves the right to cancel any course where the minimum registration has not been met. Anyone registered for a course that has been cancelled is eligible for a full refund, Cancelled course fees may also be used towards any other Winnipeg Film Group training programs.

We’re located in the heart of Winnipeg's historic Exchange District in the Artspace building. We are across the street from Old Market Square at the corner of Arthur Street and Bannatyne - one block west of Main.
