Through the showcasing of film and video, Kohinoor uses a critical postcolonial lens to examine historical and contemporary topics impacting diasporic communities. The collective aims to grow into a strong network of artists and critical thinkers.
Celebrated British director Gurinder Chadda’s first feature film centers on a busload of Punjabi-British women and a day at the beach in Blackpool. Troubles between the women arise on the topics of feminism, tradition, and modernity set against the backdrop of the persistent, old-world racism of a small British coastal town. Billed as a comedy-drama, Bhaji on the Beach offers everything from nosy aunties and Bollywood mania to interracial relationships and surviving domestic violence.
