A wonderful portrait of the legendary African singer Miriam Makeba, from her appearance at a United Nations convention urging it to boycott the South African government, to her charismatic live performances. Featuring rare archival footage and interviews with friends and family, the film outlines her life. Blacklisted in South Africa after appearing in Lionel Rogosin’s political exposé Come Back, Africa (1959), she was boycotted by the US music industry for her political activism and her 1968 marriage to Black Power leader Stokely Carmichael, before settling in Guinea.
