Where do we get our inspiration from? For many, it’s our formative first experiences – first heartbreak, first falling out with a friend, first job – that build the foundation of our character and make us into the people we are today. In this intimate and interactive screenwriting workshop, writer/director Chandler Levack (“I Like Movies”) will teach you how to structure a screenplay based on a universal “first” experience. She’ll break down the structure of a typical screenplay or first TV pilot in the “coming of age” genre, give you a syllabus of movies and TV shows to watch, as well as screenwriting resources, and create an in-class writer’s room based on the essential experience of your “first job.” For fans of movies and TV shows like “Lady Bird” and “Freaks & Geeks,” learn how mining your most embarassing, funniest and painful experiences can be the cornerstone of great screenwriting, as well as how to dramatize those moments on the page as a filmmaker.

CHANDLER LEVACK (writer/director) grew up in Burlington, Ontario and lives in Toronto where she studied cinema at the University of Toronto and screenwriting at the Canadian Film Centre. She has directed numerous music videos, earning two JUNO nominations. As a veteran journalist and critic, Chandler has earned two National Magazine Award nominations and has written for publications that include SPIN, Rolling Stone and the Globe & Mail. In 2017, her debut short film We Forgot to Break Up premiered at TIFF and went on to play SXSW and won the “Best Canadian Short Film” prize at the Whistler Film Festival. In 2022, Chandler released her debut feature I Like Movies, funded by Telefilm Canada’s Talent to Watch program. It premiered at TIFF and has since played VIFF, Golden Horse Taipei and was selected for Canada’s Top 10 Film Festival. Her second feature Anglophone (in development with Zapruder Films) is based on Chandler’s experiences navigating the Montreal indie rock scene in the early 2010’s as a young female music writer.
