This INTRO TO SCREENWRITING course will teach some of the basics of telling a story, how to translate it into script format and get it camera ready. Students will be asked to bring an idea or story to class to discuss. Class will begin promptly at 7pm.
DAY 1 – BACK TO BASICS:
- Story Structure
- Loglines and synopsis
- Characters
- Film Genres
- Script anatomy and format
- Short film vs feature
DAY 2 – WRITE, RE-WRITE, SHOOT:
- Pitch your story
- Learning how to refine that story
- Taking criticism and notes
- So, you wrote a script, now what?
The Instructor:
JJ Neepin is a First Nations filmmaker from Winnipeg and has worked in various parts of the local industry since 2009. From her times at facilitating workshops with Film Training Manitoba, working as a Production Assistant on union shows to producing and directing her own short films, including the documentary short Headdress with CBC. Recently JJ directed two episodes of APTN’s true crime series TAKEN Season 2 (airing in the fall of 2017). In between gigs JJ is always writing, she recently won the TELEFILM New Voices Award at the 2017 Toronto Screenwriting Conference for a feature length script ‘Feel Good’.
