INTRO SEMINAR: HOW TO MAKE YOUR FIRST SHORT FILM

In this two-hour introductory seminar, filmmakers will learn how to begin to move forward a short film idea into an actual film. Participants are encouraged to come prepared to briefly discuss short film ideas they are considering.

TOPICS COVERED

• What role interests you in filmmaking – writer, director or producer?

• How long is a short film script (page count)?

• What are your goals in making your film? When you’re finished your film, what do you plan to do with it? What do you hope will happen?

• The different opportunities that are generally available to different genres (experimental, documentary, drama, animation, etc.)

• What about your film makes it unique? What aesthetic qualities are you considering?

• How to figure out how much your film is going to cost to make

• Basic planning considerations that will affect your budget, including locations, actors and key creative

• Final format and post release marketing and distribution expenses to consider before finalizing your budget

• What are the main funding opportunities available for short films?

• Why you shouldn’t bank on crowd-funding if you are a beginning filmmaker

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

Filmmaker and author Cecilia Araneda has completed eleven short films as director and writer, which have won awards and screened in festivals, curated programs and art house cinemas internationally. Among the film festivals that have featured Araneda’s work are Visions du Réel, Festival du Nouveau Cinéma, The Images Festival, Ann Arbor Film Festival, Festival de Cine de Huesca and Hamburg International Short Film Festival. In 2010, Araneda’s work was featured in a retrospective screening at the Canadian Film Institute in Ottawa, Canada.  In 2011, Araneda was recognized by the Province of Manitoba for her work as a woman artist working for social change.

We’re located in the heart of Winnipeg's historic Exchange District in the Artspace building. We are across the street from Old Market Square at the corner of Arthur Street and Bannatyne - one block west of Main.
