Award winning Metis animator Terril Calder is one of the most important animation artists in Canada who attended University in Winnipeg but is now based in Toronto.
She will deliver a hands on workshop and basic overview of stop motion animation covering doll making, claymation, involving Dragonframe, Adobe AE and Premiere. Calder creates gorgeous hand crafted stop motion animated shorts expressing strong First Nations thematic concerns. Her animated work has strongly influenced many Indigenous filmmakers and a new generation in film; Spotted Fawn (aka Amanda Strong) and Michelle Latimer were both mentored and/or assisted by Terril in their animated work.
Terril attended the Faculty of Fine Arts at University of Manitoba and has lectured and taught art through the years with various organizations including the National Ballet School of Canada and the ImagineNATIVE’s Cultural Exchange Program with South Africa. Her films have played at film festivals around the world with an Honorable Mention at the Sundance Festival and Berlin and has made TIFF’s TOP TEN SHORT films list twice. In collaboration with Urban Shaman Contemporary Aboriginal Art Gallery and ImagineNATIVE Film + Media Arts Festival she is in Winnipeg to screen a retrospective of her animated works on Friday and Saturday May 11 and 12 at The Cinematheque.
