FLASHES OF LIGHT: 16MM B&W RAYOGRAMS AND CONTACT PRINTING

FLASHES OF LIGHT: 16MM B&W RAYOGRAMS AND CONTACT PRINTING

SAT, OCT 26 / 10am - 4pm

Location: Winnipeg Film Group
Registration Fee: 75 – 100
Instructor: Alex Mackenzie

Time to turn the lights off and experiment. Led by acclaimed filmmaker Alex MacKenzie (Vancouver), this workshop explores the potential of Black and White moving image rayograms, the technique whereby objects are placed on the surface of the film, exposed to light, and processed to negative.

We will also briefly explore handprocessing here so we can process, see and screen the results of our luminous efforts.

The workshop will also incorporate contact printing into this technique, where images of pre-existing found footage are used as source material, manipulated on the surface of the raw film stock, and exposed to create stunning new images. 16mm film stock will be supplied and a group piece will be created by running lengths of film out and each working on an area of it under a safelight.

NOTE: please bring little objects you might want to place on the film – small objects are more effective: ie: staples, paperclips, lifesavers, washers, screws, bits of nature (flower petals, grass), bits of paper, and anything larger with a pattern (looseweave fabric like burlap, clusters of string, your grandma’s old doilies, etc.) Remember – each single image is a little under 16mm wide, so keep that in mind!

No prior experience necessary.

For more information on workshops, please contact Ivan at the Winnipeg Film Group Production Centre at 925-3456 ext 109 orivan@winnipegfilmgroup.com

Note: Two spots in this workshop will be reserved for participants registered through the Winnipeg Film Group’s Workshop Access Bursary Fund. The fund is designed to assist aspiring and emerging Manitoba filmmakers from Aboriginal or diverse cultural backgrounds (of all ages) in furthering their knowledge of the art of filmmaking.

Through this program candidates are encouraged to apply for a space in a WFG workshop of their choice with each bursary awarded on an individual, per workshop basis.
