An advanced 3 part documentary workshop discussing the potential of interviews, locations and visual elements for your next documentary.

Class 1: Person—Part One . Fri. Jan 29/ 7-10 PM

•      Genre, expectations, and the talking head

•      Casting & conducting interviews

•      Relationship / rapport with characters

•      Style & how interviews fit within the doc

Class 2: Person—Part Two. Sat. Jan 30/2-5 PM

•       Location and storytelling:

•      Action and events: building a scene

•      Genre: Cinema Verite, B-Roll & live action scenes

•      Style, metaphor & how B-Roll fit within the doc

Class 3: Place—Part One. Sun. Jan 31/2-5PM

•      Genres: Biography, history films, MTS TV docs

•      Found elements: footage, photos, scrapbooks, objects & ephemeral

•      Where to look: archives, private collections

•      Stylistic devices & how visual elements fit within the doc

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR: Kevin Nikkel is a writer / producer / director based in Winnipeg, Canada.  He completed a Bachelor of Education at University of Manitoba and a Master of Adult Education from St. Francis Xavier University in Nova Scotia. His dramatic, animated and documentary films have reached audiences internationally at festivals, on television and on the web.  His latest feature documentary, On the Trail of the Far Fur Country, depicts the journey of rediscovery of a lost Canadian classic silent film. He is active in the film community of Winnipeg, contributing to Playing in Traffic, Catacomb Microcinema, the Winnipeg Cinematheque, and the Winnipeg Film Group.  He juggles his time between filmmaking, parenting, and teaching.

-The Winnipeg Film Group reserves the right to cancel any course where the minimum registration has not been met. Anyone registered for a course that has been cancelled is eligible for a full refund, Cancelled course fees may also be used towards any other Winnipeg Film Group training programs.

We’re located in the heart of Winnipeg's historic Exchange District in the Artspace building. We are across the street from Old Market Square at the corner of Arthur Street and Bannatyne - one block west of Main.
