In this workshop, you will discover the basic fundamentals of directing a documentary film- how to create story structure, researching and interviewing techniques, narrative choices and capturing footage and b-roll. You will also learn concepts that help maximize knowing what kind of story you want to tell, how to build trust with the subjects you’re documenting, types of questions to ask and what shoot days will look like.

Kevin Nikkel is a Winnipeg writer / producer / director. He completed a Bachelor of Education at University of Manitoba and a Master of Adult Education from St. Francis Xavier University in Nova Scotia. His dramatic, animated and documentary films have reached audiences internationally at festivals, on television and on the web. His first feature, On the Trail of the Far Fur Country (2014), won Best Canadian Feature Documentary at the Vancouver DOXA Film Fest 2015. He juggles his time between filmmaking, parenting, and teaching.
