Canada’s Top Ten: Never Steady, Never Still

Wed, Jan 31 / 7 pm
Directed by Kathleen Hepburn
2017, Canada, 110 min

Kathleen Hepburn’s much-anticipated debut is set against a spectacular northern BC backdrop. It is the intimate story of Judy (Shirley Henderson, astonishing in a demanding role), a devoted mother wrestling with Parkinson’s, and Jamie (Théodore Pellerin), a son who is saddled with unwanted adult responsibilities while attempting to come to grips with his slippery sexual identity. While Jamie weathers the unrelenting abuse of his oilfield co-worker, Judy’s obstacles take more mundane forms: as her health deteriorates, even meal preparation requires a Herculean effort. Left listing by devastating loss, mother and son slowly steer their lives back on course aided by the friendship they each forge with a pregnant teenager.

Now in its 17th year Canada’s Top Ten Film Festival™ highlights the best features, shorts and student shorts from across the country. The breadth of programming selected by filmmakers, programmers, critics and industry professionals represents the creative strength of the country’s best cinema.

Generously sponsored by IATSE 856 and the Toronto International Film Festival .

Reviews

The small, exquisite moments hit hard in Hepburn’s feature debut… Each character, and their every exchange, feels lived-in, rich and poetic. - Radheyan Simonpillai, NOW Magazine
