Much has been made of the great influence of “the Bauhaus”. Finally, it’s been made into a delightful and powerfully moving film. All the better for championing the struggle of women in the life of the school. Lotte, the film’s lead character, is a fictional composite of several Bauhaus women — primarily Alma Siedhoff-Buscher, here portrayed as a gifted carpenter and architect. Forced to weave when she’d rather build, Lotte insists and persists, to the point of besting the school’s founding director, Walter Gropius. It’s a damn fine movie, poignant in capturing the conflict of liberty and oppression that characterize Germany in the 20’s and 30s.
Co-presented with the Goethe-Institut.
Now in its ninth year, the Architecture + Design Film Festival (A+DFF) presents critically acclaimed films focusing on the importance of architecture and design in everyday life. The films cover a range of design-oriented topics from architecture and urban design to graphics and product design. A+DFF is the only festival in Canada devoted solely to architecture and design. This festival is generously supported by The Manitoba Association of Architects, The Winnipeg Foundation, the Faculty of Architecture Endowment Fund (University of Manitoba), and presented in partnership with Urban Idea and the WFG Cinematheque.
