13th Annual WNDX Festival of Moving Image

Sep 19 - 23, 2018

“A lighthouse far off in the distance illuminates our way.  From the prairies we squint towards its direction, marking this elephantine silhouette, arisen as a mountainous cyclops, and we peer directly within its luminescent eye.  Sharing its vision we see a storm rising from the East. It’s often easy to forget the expanse of our vast landscape and the ways in which it bravely unfurls into the Atlantic – but not anymore. An authoritative wave is coming our way, crashing into our city centre bringing forth a potent concoction of image works – a tidal force of spectral beauty and inspiration, new and longstanding voices echoing through our radio waves – can you hear them? You will soon.  Our East Coast spotlight will feature a curated program of short film works completed in the recent years, honouring the hard work emerging from the shorelines. Within PLATFORM centre’s gallery walls, one will experience and celebrate Lisa Lipton’s ambitious multipart project called The Impossible Blue Rose.  We then punctuate the East presence with a retrospective of the short works of the incredible Cory Bowles (auteur of the acclaimed feature film Black Cop) and two performances by east coastian’s Amanda Dawn Christie and Andrew Milne.   Travelling even deeper past the Atlantic all the way to India we are excited to bring to Winnipeg the exhibition, Random Variables. Curated by Ushmita Sahu, this exhibition features image moving works from emerging artists from all across India. From Chicago, we’re bringing in two contemporary filmmakers with their own unique takes on cinematic forms: Lori Felker will be joining us to present her new documentary Future Language,  and through retrospective we will bask in the idiosyncratic oeuvres of artist Amy Lockhart! Interspersed amongst these fantastic filmmaker spotlights we’re presenting incredible curated programs highlighting the best of France’s Les Innatendus film festival, and a poignant program of indigenous works curated by Julie Nagam and Carla Taunton. As always, an open call of 5 programs will reflect upon some of the best international works featured alongside strong prairie films from both emerging and established artists.  FINALLY, we cap off our festival with the wonderful One Take Super 8 event – over 30 new super 8 works projected amongst a crowd of nervous filmmakers. Not. To. Be. Missed!” – WNDX Curatorial Collective
