Jazz on Film (June 2023)

In collaboration with Jazz Winnipeg, the Cinematheque presents a series of jazz music films featuring Alain Gomis’ behind-the-scenes documentary and concert film Rewind & Play, spotlighting legendary jazz pianist and composer Thelonious Monk; The Connection, a new restoration of the American independent classic by Shirley Clarke, featuring a quartet of musicians led by the pianist and composer Freddie Redd and saxophonist Jackie McLean; and finally, the pioneering Afrofurist and surrealist vision Space is The Place, starring Sun Ra and his Arkestra.

Call for submissions: The 2023 Barry Lank $1,500 Memorial Award

The 2nd Annual Barry Lank Memorial Award is presented by DOC Manitoba and the Winnipeg Film Group, in conjunction with the annual Gimme Some Truth Festival. The award is given to those who have shown exemplary work in the social awareness / social justice film genre as showcased in a particular documentary film. It is named in honour of Barry Lank csc, a Winnipeg-born film director and producer. The award recognizes a documentary that embodies Barry’s dedication to the craft and passion for storytelling.
