Gimli Film Festival kicks off this Wednesday, July 25 and there are so many films (local and otherwise) to see!
Here are some picks from WFG Distribution:
Guy Maddin’s second feature, Archangel (1990), will screen with his short, The Heart of the World (2000), on Thursday, July 26 at 8pm with the filmmaker in attendance.
Kalli Anderson and Zachary Finkelstein’s Bird City Lights, a short documentary about a bird rescuer in Toronto’s Financial District, will play with Cam Patterson’s Aboard the Namao on Friday (10am) and Saturday (5:30pm).
The Manitoba Shorts in Competition program, taking place on Saturday at 12:30pm at the Gimli Theatre, features Piece of Mind by Erin Hembrador, Dying Light by Luke Whitmore, The Birdwatcher by Ryan Steel, Surfacing by Trevor Kristjanson, Run as One – The Journey of the Front Runners by Erica Daniels, Zaasaakwe by Madison Thomas, and From the Dirt by Tyler Funk and Carmen Ponto.
Two documentaries by Elise Swerhone, Tommy Douglas: Keeper of the Flame and Havakeen Lunch, will screen at 3pm on Saturday during Doc Manitoba’s Doc Day Afternoon programming.
Erika MacPherson’s documentary, HeimÞrá, In Thrall to Home, will screen with Andy Blicq’s A Song For John Ramsey on Thursday (5:30pm) and Saturday (10am).
Alex Ateah’s short comedy, HOT-HOT-HOTT, will screen on the beach (!!!) with Dazed and Confused on Friday at 10pm as part of the RBC Sunset Screenings at Gimli Beach.
The Indigenous Filmmakers Association Short Films program includes Charlene Moore’s Moccasin Stories, Ryan Wilson’s Waabishki-Ma’iingan (A White Wolf), Rachel Beaulieu’s Red River Roots, Rhayne Vermette’s Full of Fire, Jesse Spence’s Forgotten, Tyshana Hobson’s Bank Statement, Roger Boyer’s The Spider, Amanda Kindzierski’s The Escapist, and Erica Daniels’s Run As One – The Journey of the Front Runners. This program screens at 3pm on Sunday at the Aspire Theatre (Unitarian Church).
Sonya Ballantyne’s portrait of her grandmother, Nosisim, will screen with Mankiller, an award-winning feature by Valerie Red-Horse Mohl, on Thursday (5:30pm) and Sunday (3pm).
Two local films, Bisong Taiwo’s Saving Grace and Jenny Ng-Turner’s A Mother’s Love, are included in Sunday’s 3pm shorts program, Rinse and Repeat.
Dave Barber and Kevin Nikkel’s feature documentary on the history of the WFG, Tales from the Winnipeg Film Group, screens on Thursday (12:30pm) and Friday (10pm).
Several Manitoba-made shorts are screening in When You Light a Candle, You Also Cast a Shadow at 3pm at Lady of the Lake Theatre on Saturday, including Jesse de Rocquigny’s Breakfast, BJ Verot’s Echoes in the Ice, and Scott Fitzpatrick’s Trigger Warning, alongside former Winnipegger Matthew Rankin’s Tesla World Light.
Additionally, WFG Distribution Coordinator Steph Berrington will be a mentor in Gimli Film Festival’s The Future is Female* Mentorship Program for woman-identified folks! This brand-new initiative will bring around 50 participants to Gimli by chartered bus on Friday for a full day of inspiring and educational women-driven programming, including screenings, filmmaker Q&As, workshops, a panel hosted by Women in View, and a networking reception! Steph is very excited to be participating in this!
