Following his familyâs untimely demise, prairie homesteader George Bassler bizarrely spends 1945 crafting a Perpetual Motion machine uncannily echoing similarly named inventor Johann Besslerâs 1712 invention, the Perpetuum Mobile. Based on actual events, this film explores obsession with employing mechanical devices to trick time and make everything last forever.

Phantasm

A body moves repeatedly and is recorded on film. Each repetition of the movement phrase is revealed in time on a single 35mm frame. Through a slit-scan photograph the body recorded in time becomes distorted in space evoking spectral imagery. Sacrificing our connection with space we gain a glimpse of our shape in time.

our location

We’re located in the heart of Winnipeg's historic Exchange District in the Artspace building. We are across the street from Old Market Square at the corner of Arthur Street and Bannatyne - one block west of Main.

The Winnipeg Film Group is located on Treaty 1 Territory and on the ancestral lands of the Anishinaabeg, Cree, Oji-Cree, Dakota and Dene Peoples and in the homeland of the Métis Nation. We offer our respect and gratitude to the traditional caretakers of this land.
