Traffiiiik

By Robert Pasternak | 00:01:30 | Animation, Experimental | 01/04/2007

An abstract designed film that started as an experiment. Made by applying ‘border tape’ (a long obsolete product used by graphic and production artists to make borders for ads) directly to clear 16mm film stock to see how the various patterns would synchronize with the frame rate and with one another.

Berlin

By Guy Maddin | 00:01:00 | Experimental | 01/01/2008

Maddin's film incorporates found footage to provide a glimpse of wartime Berlin. Crowds of soldiers march in formation, play instruments and engage in training drills. Burning fires and a frantic pace contrast with the organized movements of the troops, perhaps foreshadowing the destructive events to come.

Warchild

By Caroline Monnet | 00:05:40 | Documentary, Experimental | 01/09/2010

On a solitary portage between the barren wilderness and a desolate city, a young man reflects on his troubled past and hopeful future. Honest, thoughtful and personal narration illuminates a survivor’s state of mind that seeks serenity, while a background drumbeat accelerates the pace of this starkly resilient, black and white cinematic portrait. (Alex Rogalski,…

Magus, The

By Jaimz Asmundson | 00:12:00 | Documentary, Experimental | 01/01/2011

The Magus is a multi-format, process-based experimental film that explores the root of artistic creation. The film documents visual artist, C. Graham Asmundson's body of work over a rigorous six-month period. Filmmaker Jaimz Asmundson, Graham’s son, uses cinematography and editing as magical weapons to ritualistically birth, destroy and resurrect his father's work. Through psychedelic imagery and…

Black Saltwater Elegy

By Solomon Nagler | 00:16:20 | Experimental | 01/01/2010

Black Saltwater Elegy intimately links the discordant threads of a popular history of dispossession (Africville) with the solitude of its protagonist's graveyard-shift fantasies.

Maiden Indian

By The Ephemerals | 00:03:25 | Documentary | 01/06/2011

Curious about the recent popularity of mukluks and feathered headbands, three friends begin sifting through racks of new trends collecting fashionable signifiers of Indigenous identity. Their window shopping is contrasted by a museum visit full of artifacts and ethnographic dioramas meant to represent historical Aboriginal culture. With fabric and sewing machines, they begin to stitch…
