Sat, Jan 3 / 3 pm & 7 pm
Sun, Jan 4 / 7 pm
Wed, Jan 7 / 7 pm
Directed by Roberto Rossellini
1945, Italy, 103 min
(Italian and German w/English subtitles)

Shot in 1945 in the immediate aftermath of the liberation of Rome, Rossellini’s masterpiece (described by Martin Scorsese as “the most precious moment of film history”) returns to the screen in a gorgeous 4K digital restoration. Set during the occupation, the narrative follows disparate strands of resistance struggling under the crushing jackboot of the Nazis. Ubaldo Arata’s visceral cinematography blends the grit of a documentary with the heart and soul of a drama as the people of Rome wrestle with the constraints, compromises and collusions of life during wartime.

Reviews

A still thrilling call to conscience and hope...electrifying...a cinematic landmark.
-Wall Street Journal
Rossellini’s Neo-Realism masterpiece…The story plays like a gripping thriller: a cat-and-mouse game between Gestapo and resistance cell.
