Directed by Ana Lily Amirpour
2014, USA, 99 min
Farsi w/English subtitles

Dubbed the first Iranian vampire western, the film garnered a rapturous reception at last year’s Sundance Film Festival. Set in the fictitious Bad City, it is a home to debauched drug users and other degenerates where a subdued vampire stalks the denizens. Our vampire girl only changes her ways upon being seduced by a debonair romantic named Arash. But Amirpour’s feature directorial debut is more than just a compelling narrative – its Iranian psychedelic rock and stunning anamorphic black-and-white indicate a refreshing and assured new talent.

Reviews

One of the best films of the year. A casual masterpiece fit to live beside the best work of David Lynch. This is a dream on your screen, absurd, languid and possessed by the calm of an inevitable beauty. This is what cinema was invented for… profound.
