AN HONEST FRAMING: PERSONALIZING YOUR DOC

AN HONEST FRAMING: PERSONALIZING YOUR DOC

Sat Feb 12, 2011, 2PM to 4PM

Location: Black Lodge
Registration Fee: Free
Instructor: Alan Zweig

In this master lecture, documentary filmmaker Alan Zweig will discuss the genesis of his “mirror trilogy” films, including his decision making process when selecting his topic, finding rapport with his participants and the inclusion of his own personal reflections within the films.

How did this pseudo-therapeutic approach to documentary interviews and to autobiographical scenes evolve? What choices are made to structure the tone, pace and visual style of these films? How do you survive as a filmmaker, getting independent director-driven films made in the current climate of Canadian documentary cinema? All of this and more.  Not to be missed.

  • Date: Sat Feb 12, 2011, 2PM to 4PM
  • Location: Winnipeg Cinematheque
  • Fee: FREE for members of the WFG, DOC Winnipeg and OSM
  • Instructor: Alan Zweig

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

“I began my professional career as a driver, for 16 years in a cab, putting myself through film school and subsequently the occasional gig in the transportation department of the film industry.” –Alan Zweig

Alan is the director of Lovable, the third and final film in a de facto trilogy of autobiographical documentaries known as the “Mirror Trilogy.” His last film, I, Curmudgeon premiered at Hot Docs International Documentary Festival, where it was an audience favourite and has continued to be a festival hit. The first documentary in the trilogy, Vinyl, explored the lives of record collectors (including Winnipeggers, Guy Maddin and Greg Klymkiw), and also premiered at Hot Docs where it was nominated for the Chalmers Award.  Alan’s Stealing Images won Best Short Film at the Toronto International Film Festival and the Silver Hugo at the Chicago International Film Festival.  His documentary feature, A Hard Name won a Genie for Best Feature Length Documentary. Alan is also the director of The Darling Family, a dramatic feature.  He has also written episodic television and feature films, worked as a story editor and acted in a number of short dramas.
