This brilliant, weird feature resembles David Lynch’s Eraserhead and Todd Browning’s Freaks. In a deft tragicomic performance, Jess Weixler (Teeth) plays Mabel, a movie star “slumming it” in an outré art-horror film. As her relationship with Rosenthal (Under the Skin’s Adam Pearson), a gentle young man with a facial deformity, evolves, cinematic notions of beauty, representation, and exploitation are questioned.
