India Film Festival of Alberta: 3 Seconds Divorce

Sat, July 6 / 9 pm
Directed by Shazia Javed
2018, Canada, 54 min

A sharia practice allows Muslim men to divorce their wives by simply saying the word ‘divorce’ three times in one go. Commonly called triple-talaq or triple-divorce, this instant, oral divorce can only be given by men. In India, Muslim women have been fighting an arduous battle to get this practice legally abolished. This is their story.

Presented in partnership with Edmonton Movie Club.

Reviews

Due to a complex history and a precarious political situation, Indian Muslims have been embroiled in struggles for identity, religious freedom and minority rights. It is deeply challenging to discuss and debate rights of women within minority communities. Shazia Javed, Director of ‘3 Seconds Divorce’ has done a tremendous job of creating a documentary on this topic, as seen through the eyes of Indian Muslim women themselves.
