Brown Girl Begins is an afrofuturist film about a young black woman who is trapped in a world forced upon her. It’s 2049 on a forsaken island off the coast of Toronto where the survival of the islanders depends on young Ti-Jeanne, a reluctant priestess, to risk death and realize her destiny to save her people.
Preceded by Lost Alien – directed by tobias c. van Veen, Canada, 25 mins – blending documentary techniques with surrealist and silent filmmaking, Lost Alien captures the Afrofuturist cosplay of ZiggZaggerZ the Bastard as a photosensitive black alien stranded on a sunlit planet.
Presented with the generous support of Rebecca Gibson.
