This amazing 90 minute program of stereoscopic treasures dates back to the dawn of 3 D cinematography. Presented for the first time on our new digital 3D DCP system, this is an eye-popping collection of nine rare films that have been restored and mastered in 2K from original 35mm elements. Films include the 3D trailer for Jack Clayton’s classic The Creature from the Black Lagoon; Doom Town, a controversial anti-atomic testing film which was mysteriously pulled from theatrical release after a few play-dates in July 1953; the puppet cartoon The Adventures of Sam Space; New Dimensions (aka Motor Rhythm) the first domestic full color 3D film which was originally shown at the New York World’s Fair in May 1940; Boo Moon, an excellent example of color stereoscopic animation from 1953 with Casper the Friendly Ghost; I’ll Sell my Shirt, a burlesque comedy unseen in 3D for over 60 years photographed by cinematographer William C. Thompson (Ed Wood’s Plan 9 from Outer Space, Night of the Ghouls) and The Maze – a coming attraction trailer with fantastic 3D production design by the legendary designer William Cameron Menzies (Gone With The Wind, Invaders from Mars and Things to Come).

The first documented public exhibition of a 3-D motion picture took place on June 10, 1915 at New York’s Astor Theatre. To commemorate the centennial, the 3-D Film Archive curated a selection of stereoscopic treasures dating back to the dawn of 3-D cinematography.
