From Juke Joints to Church Halls: Jazz and Blues Film Fest
In conjunction with the TD Winnipeg International Jazz Festival, we present a terrific program of recent films on jazz and blues with a pop-up jazz record sale, special introductions, a panel on how jazz and blues artists are portrayed on film and a draw for prizes!
Several Winnipeg musicians and panelists speak about how they see jazz artists portrayed on film. Did Ethan Hawke capture the real Chet Baker? What do they get right or wrong in other films ? Moderator Neil Coligan is the host of Jazz After 9 on Winnipeg’s Classic 107 which is heard Monday to Friday from 9 until midnight. He is a widely experienced news broadcaster and huge jazz fan. Panelists include teacher and musician Vladimir Simosko who has published three books on Eric Dolphy, Artie Shaw and Serge Chaloff and has written numerous reviews and articles on jazz; Marc Glassman, a jazz fan, film programmer, arts journalist, editor of POV and Montage and former owner of Pages Bookstore; trumpet player and vocalist Emily Kidd from the University of Manitoba jazz program who is performing a tribute to the music of Chet Baker at this year’s jazz festival and Quincy Davis – a world-renowned drummer who has been teaching at the University of Manitoba for the last 6 years. Before moving to Winnipeg, he lived in New York City where Quincy played with many luminaries of jazz with whom he continues to play when he is not teaching.
