Theeb continues to achieve international success since its release to film festivals and theatres around the world. Theeb has now screened in 25 countries and won 18 major film awards, including Best Director at the Venice Film Festival. Its most recent win was 3 awards at the 12th Trans-Saharan International Film Festival in Zegura, Morocco and an award for Outstanding Debut by A British Director at the British Academy of Film Awards. The New York Times Described it as a “spellbinding Jordanian adventure.” The film has already made a comeback in cinemas in Egypt and Lebanon with sold out screenings.

“About as perfect a companion piece to David Lean’s Lawrence of Arabia as one could hope for, this first feature from Jordanian director Naji Abu Nowar is that country’s official entry into the upcoming Academy Awards. It’s 1916, and Theeb (newcomer Jacir Eid), a young Bedouin boy, is forced to fend for himself after he jumps camp to follow his beloved older brother Hussein (Hussein Salameh) on a mission to guide a British army officer (Fox) to a long-abandoned well. Once there, they find that bandits, presumably, have slaughtered the Brit’s men. A moonlit battle ensues, leaving Theeb the only survivor. This is the tale of Theeb (which means “wolf”), and his accelerated journey from wide-eyed innocent to desperate young man.”- Austin Chronicle

Reviews

A classic adventure film of the best kind… the stunning location work in southern Jordan has the grandeur of Monument Valley. Like all well-done adventure tales, especially those with an intimate human focus and an expansive, epic vision, Theeb works on multiple levels.
