In conjunction with the screening of his film, Le coeur de madame Sabali at Cinematheque playing from Jan. 28th – Feb.4, 2016, Ryan McKenna will teach a 2-part workshop.
In this workshop McKenna will focus on directing independent feature films, while relating it to his own personal experiences. Part one will focus on stylization in a low-budget guerrilla filmmaking situation, while part two will focus on working with a technical team to create a distinct personal aesthetic.
PART 1 (Jan. 26, 2016) – GUERRILLA FILMMAKING: This workshop will detail getting the most out of a small budget by writing for specific actors and locations, how and when to steal shots, and closely following weather patterns for bargain basement special effects. McKenna will also go into a historical overview of Winnipeg’s distinctive regional cinema that inspired his first feature The First Winter.
PART 2 (Jan. 27, 2016)– WORKING WITH A CREW: In the second part of the workshop we will focus on designing images through choice of color, lighting, location, music and casting, and how to work with your technical team to create a unique cinematic style. McKenna will also give a historical overview of the visual comedies and Technicolor films that inspired his second film The Heart of Madame Sabali.
