Departure of Monica Lowe and David Knipe

Apr 9, 2022

The Winnipeg Film Group would like to announce the departure of Deputy Director Monica Lowe and Cinematheque Head Programmer David Knipe. Both were passionate about independent cinema and helped elevate the Winnipeg Film Group in the community.

Monica Lowe was the long-time Director of Distribution and in this position, she was dedicated to enabling the unique artistic vision created by independent film and video makers to be accessible to as broad an audience as possible and to educating audiences to the quality of artistic work created by local and Canadian film and video artists. Monica was involved in a variety of special Distribution projects and initiatives involving the work in our collection including the Archive / Counter Archive Case Study for the WFG.  She was also a co-founder and served on the Executive of VUCAVU for 10 years. In her role as Deputy Director, she coordinated funder and project management, financial and operating administration, facilities, and human resources. The Winnipeg Film Group is grateful for the years of service Monica has dedicated to the organization and wishes her the best in her next endeavour.

David Knipe is leaving the Winnipeg Film Group after 6 years of dedicated service. Since the passing of Cinematheque Senior Programmer Dave Barber, David has been responsible for overseeing the theatre’s programming and leading its artistic direction. Prior to that he held the position of Manager of Operations and Special Programming of the Winnipeg Film Group’s Cinematheque. He has been the Artistic Director of the Gimme Some Truth Documentary Festival since 2017 and is a co-founder of the Afro Prairie Film Festival and was its Artistic Director from 2018-2020. David served as interim Director of the Winnipeg Film Group for one year where he helped transition the organization through some difficult times. The Winnipeg Film Group thanks David for his time with the organization and looks forward to seeing his next artistic activities.
