Vivi embarks on writing and producing her first play for the Winnipeg Fringe Festival. It’s a lot of work for a play she won’t get to see as Vivi lost all her sight in her early twenties. Based on the Harlem Renaissance novel Passing by Nella Larsen, Vivi’s play (also called Passing) presents themes and characters as relevant today as back in Harlem’s 1920s. Interestingly, the making of her play has maybe more twists and turns than the play itself.

Night Mayor tells the story of inventor Nihad Ademi, who harnesses the power of the aurora borealis in Winnipeg in 1939. Ademi uses this power to broadcast images of Canada to its own citizens from coast to coast, but in the process he angers the government.
There will be a live discussion between filmmaker Leona Krahn and subject Vivi Dabee moderated by Caelum Vatnsdal immediately after the screening.
Leona Krahn is a Winnipeg filmmaker whose award-winning body of work spans over 20 years. Her films (documentary and narrative short) have screened on The Documentary Channel, CBC Newsworld, national CBC, CTV, Bell MTS and on networks in Poland, Hong Kong etc. Festival showings include the Socially Relevant Film Festival in NYC, Harlem International Film Festival, NH Docs in New Haven, CT, Montreal World Film Festival, Festival Mental in Portugal to name a few. She strives to create meaningful, affecting and entertaining programs that will long be remembered.
Caelum Vatnsdal was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and resides there still with his wife and son. He is a filmmaker who has made movies about disaffected youth and Bigfoot, and is the author of They Came From Within: A History of Canadian Horror Cinema, Kino Delirium: The Films of Guy Maddin, and You Don’t Know Me, But You Love Me: The Lives of Dick Miller, all published by ARP Books.
